All buildings in France seem to have shutters. These I'm sure provide hundreds of uses; when it's warm, the house is sheltered and shaded, while still allowing any wind in; in winter, it adds an extra layer of protection and insulation from the snow and then unwanted wind. They also give all the rural areas of France a connecting feature, making something that could be quite ugly and unfitting in its landscape fit in that bit more. I like them.
